How to use Animated Gobos in Unreal Engine

A step-by-step walkthrough for creating and projecting animated Gobos in Unreal Engine using Greyscalegorilla Studio assets and Light Functions

  1. Click "Quickly add to Project" button and select Lights > Spot Light from the menu.

2. Right-click Content Browser and create Media > ImgMedia Source

3. Double-click the new created ImgMedia source in Content Browser

4. Start Greyscalegorilla Studio and download the Animated Gobo you would like to use.

5. When the download is finished click Copy button on the thumbnail.

5. And paste into the Sequence Path box of the "ImgMedia Source"

6. Click "Save" button and close the window.

7. Right-click Content Browser and create Media > Media Player

8. Check the box and click OK, this will create the Media Texture in the Content Browser.

9. Click Save icon and close the window.

10. Right-click Content Browser and create Material

11. Double-click the Material and in Content Browser and set the Material Domain to Light Function.

12. Drag the Media Texture from Content Browser to Material Graph.

13. Connect the RGB output to Emissive Color and click Save then close the window.

14. Select the Spot Light from Outliner.

15. Drag the material into Light Function Material slot of the Spot Light.

16. Click Cinematics button and Add Level Sequence.

17. From the Sequencer, click Add button and select Media Track.

18. Click the (+) plus button on the Media track and select Media Source > ImgMedia Source

19. Right-click the ImgMedia Source on the timeline to bring the Properties menu > Media Texture and select the Media Texture you created earlier.

20. You can click Play button on the Sequence to see the Gobo animation.
